Say It Ain’t So, Joe
Joe was kicking off a summer tour to tune up an eventual all country show in Nashville for a DVD he’d be putting out. While the band was good and Joe played tasty licks, this was certainly not what we’d come to hear. The venue was packed with blues fans who’d turned out for a night of blues from blues guitarist extraordinaire Havana Night - A Tribute to Cuban Salsa. Imagine Sting doing a tour and surprising his fans with disco hits or Billy Joel shocking his fans with an anthology of show tunes. Instead he played one country song after another. His promoters should have been truthful, advertising this as an all-country show. An artist can grow and expand of course, so a few country tunes - given the Bonamassa treatment - would have been fine. Most of us would probably have not bought tickets. Is Joe Bonamassa turning country? Really? But these were expensive tickets and I wanted my money back. Granted, the audience for blues skews older - the crowd consisted mostly of folks in their 50s, 60s, and 70s - so perhaps Joe is thinking he doesn’t want to stake his career on a dying breed. This was not akin to Bob Dylan switching from folk to rock.
